     Lieut. John Stedman was born circa 1625.2 He was the son of Thomas Stedman.3 Lieut. John Stedman married as his first wife Elizabeth Remington before 1650.1 Lieut. John Stedman married as his second wife Elizabeth Blackleach circa 1664 3 other children not recorded.3,4 Lieut. John Stedman died on 19 December 1675 in Kingston, Colony of Rhode Island, now Washington County. He was killed in the Great Swamp Fight with the Narragansett Indians.2,3,1
     After the death's of John and Elizabeth Stedman, eldest son Sarg. John Stedman was appointed guardian of the three youngest children. This explains why some sources list the elder John's wife's name as Sarj.1
