"LT. COL. WILLIAM J. ARMSTRONG, USAF, ret., 97, passed away Wednesday morning, November 16, 2005 at Memphis Jewish Home in Cordova. He was a graduate of The Webb School in Bell Buckle, TN, and attended Rhodes College, joining Kappa Alpha. He served in WWII in Italy with the Army Air Corps and for over twenty years in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as Lieutenant-Colonel. After the war he worked at Union Planters Bank, Manhattan Branch, retiring in 1962 as Vice-President, Trust Division. He lived at his family farm near Eads. He had been active in Kiwanis, Memphis Boys Town, President of Sertoma Club, board member of the Davies Manor Foundation, and Chairman of Chambers Chapel Cemetery Association for many years. He leaves a first cousin, F. S. B. of Arlington. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Chambers Chapel United Methodist Church in Lakeland, where he was a member, with the body lying in state from 1-2 p.m. Visitation will also be tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel. Burial at Chambers Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials should be sent to Chambers Chapel Church or Cemetery Association.

"Billy" Armstrong III (18 Apr 1908 Memphis, Shelby, TN - 16 Nov 2005 Cordova/Memphis, Shelby, TN) was the son of Heslope Armistead Bragg (07 May 1880 Arlington, Shelby, TN - 24 Apr 1957 Memphis, Shelby, TN) and William James "Will" Armstrong II (1870 Maury Co., TN - ca 1943 New York, NY). He was the grandson of one of the Memphis Yellow Fever physicians and martyrs, Dr. William J. "Will" Armstrong I, and his wife, Louisa Charlotte Hanna. (The Dr. Armstrong Collection (of letters) was donated to the University of Tennessee Health Science Library (
http://library.utmem.edu/.) Billy was the family historian and a Civil War Buff . He did not marry or have issue. He was a member of the Descendants of Early Settlers of Shelby and Adjoining Counties which book will be published in 2006 and will include stories of his family."3
