John Howland moved to Indianapolis in 1836, and practiced law in association with the Honorable Lucius Barbour. He was appointed Clerd of the U. S. District Court in 1863 and held that position until his death.1 He and Desdemona Harrison appeared on the 1860 Federal census of Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, enumerated 12 June 1860.
